Our Values

MotherNation encourages Mothers to take up space, articulate their needs, and define their version of Motherhood. We know this kind of growth does not happen without hard work and vulnerability. So, we drafted our Declaration of Interdependence to create a safe space for all Mothers. Every Mother that joins our community commits to investing in their personal growth, embracing a diversity of perspectives in other Mothers, and lifting up the other Mothers that make up the nation.

We ask every Mother to acknowledge and honor our Declaration of Interdependence, in Circles and in our Private Online Community, to ensure our community is a compassionate, liberating and productive one.

Declaration of Interdependence

We, the Mothers of MotherNation, in order to embrace and encourage that every Mother navigate their version of Motherhood with confidence, honor this Declaration of Interdependence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident:

We are strong.

We are enough.

We are exactly who our children need.

We honor the people we are outside of our Motherhood.

We deserve spaces where we come first.

For too long, martyrdom and invisibility have been the cultural assumptions of Motherhood leading to the burnout, guilt, and loneliness plaguing Mothers today. Now, we stand together to shine a light on each other, so we can all articulate for ourselves and our communities what we need, want and deserve.

We, therefore, commit to ourselves and each other to:

SHARE OUR VULNERABILITY. Being vulnerable is a cornerstone of connection and facilitates meaningful relationships. When we share our vulnerability, we give permission to others to do the same and then the magic happens… we grow.

INVEST IN OURSELVES. We are more present Mothers when we listen to our minds, hearts and bodies and articulate what we need. We will encourage each other to draw boundaries and claim space. We will challenge ourselves to grow as people and actively decide how we show up as Mothers.

EMBRACE OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY. MotherNation is not a “how to” space. We know Motherhood looks different for all of us, and the only right way to Mother is to be the Mother you choose. We respect and learn from each other’s choices. We honor diversity of thought and choice and also diversity of background and identity. We value how diversity enriches our community.

LIFT EACH OTHER UP. We operate out of love and a steadfast commitment to empathy, acceptance, and empowerment. We not only stand with each other in solidarity, we commit to lifting ourselves up so we can rise together

MAKE CHANGE. Through community care and peer coaching, we make changes in our mindset and in our actions that foster individual growth. We activate our agency to create the space to be the Mothers we want to be, and then we reach farther. We leverage our collective power to impact broader change and create a better future for all Mothers. We work to build awareness and positive change around issues that matter to Mothers including: maternal mortality and near miss cases, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, paid family leave and universal childcare.

Our 2020 Make Change Partner

We are humbled and proud to work with, PL+US, our 2020 Make Change Partner. PL+US (Paid Leave for United States) has one mission: winning high quality paid family leave for everyone by 2022. We are in the middle of a caregiving crisis: millions of people in the US can’t afford to be with their families in the moments that matter most. 1 in 4 Mothers go back to work less than 2 weeks after giving birth because the vast majority of Americans (86%) have no paid leave. This troubling statistic directly contributes to poor infant and maternal health outcomes, for which the U.S. ranks at the bottom in comparison to other similar, industrialized nations.

The MotherNation community will assist PL+US with their advocacy efforts by writing letters, attending committee hearings, and educating our friends, family and, most importantly, employers about the importance of paid family leave. PL+US will empower our collective action by keeping MotherNation informed of legislative progress and other ways we can help achieve the goal of paid family leave for everyone by 2022. A portion of all MotherNation will benefit the PL+US mission and we encourage you to financially contribute if possible. Let’s do this together.
